Shooting Exercise #9 - Performance

For this exercise, I had to put myself out there a bit.  I walked around downtown Waukesha, and I asked people if I could take pictures of their shoes.  Clearly a strange request, but I think it turned out well.  :)

  1. I agree that this isn't what you normally take, but I thought this was a really clever idea. Its cool to see so many strangers be willing to model for since so many of them can be self-conscious .Also I think using different font styles to each chalk word in each photo as interest and all are easy to read, giving an appearance like you've been all over the place (other than Downtown). On a technical basis, they all appear to be well color balanced, and sharp quality. Your third photo appears to be the strongest with the shadow hitting off to the side and having the subject stand on the perfectly brick-pattern sidewalk making it eye catching while keeping the eye move naturally left to down right. Your first one could have been a little stronger by having the model's feet move more center or closer to the camera. Its a cute series and hope you'll use chalk again in another future assignment.

  2. I really like the idea behind this series of photographs. The idea is very unique and clever, and overall the competitions as a whole turned out very well!:) I think its a very creative idea to write that saying on sidewalks and then capture the many different and unique people standing above the quote. I really enjoy the first image, its probably my favorite among this series. I really like how the font of the lettering is so unique and fun looking. The only thing i would change in that photo would be to have the woman move in closer to the word, or maybe change the angles of from photo to photo. But overall i think these are very wonderful!

  3. This was a great idea for performance, and the images turned out beautifully! I love that you got other people, and seemingly strangers, to participate in the work with you. I agree with Sonja that choosing different fonts and colors of chalk for the different scenes/images was a great technical choice. Really fun exercise - and I think that this is a great example of how successful you can be when you do step a bit out of your comfort zone to try something new. Well done!

  4. This was an awesome project and a great way to get out of your comfort zone. My favorite is the second image with the dog. I think you chose a nice angle and the positioning of the dog and owner are great. I really like how the man's feet are wide set and the dog rests between them. It's like they are one person/being. The chalk quote was a creative way to tie the images together. The only distraction is the shadowing in the third and fourth images. If the shadows were more strategically planned to create a nice pattern ( the fourth image is almost on to something), the photos with the shadows would be that much more interesting. Great pictures!
