Shooting Exercise #10 - Loaded Landscapes

I was pretty perplexed with this week's shooting assignment, so I decided to do some research about Waukesha's history.  I stumbled upon a wonderful (in an awful way) murder that happened mere blocks away from our campus in 1917.  Dr. David Roberts (a successful veterinarian) had an affair with a school teacher named Grace Lusk.  Dr. Roberts' wife found out about the affair and went to talk with the teacher.  The two women got in a heated argument which ended up with Lusk shooting and killing Mrs. Roberts.  Another thing that I found interesting, was that once Lusk was found guilty of the murder, she seemed okay with it, walked over to the prosecutor, only to scream and grab him by the throat.  Who knew Waukesha had such scandalous history!!
Cutler Park - where Mrs. Roberts walked through on her way to 416 West Park Ave to meet her demise.

Also in Cutler Park.  There was no record of this murder anywhere around the neighborhood.

Unfortunately, all of the addresses in the article I read are no longer in existence.  This house is about where the murder had taken place on Park Ave.

A parking garage on Wisconsin Ave. where the Roberts' home was once located.

A former business that would have looked like Dr. Roberts' Veterinary practice on Grand Ave.

  1. Looks like we were both in Cutler Park this weekend! There’s really a lot of history there (murderers and famous people), but today it seems like just a nice little park. I never noticed how colorful that parking garage is! I think you did a good job of capturing what seem to be ordinary city scenes, and people generally don’t have an idea what the history is of these places.

  2. Im amazed at how much you researched and what you found out from doing this assignment. Seems pretty scandals indeed! I find it pretty cool that I've walked by all of these places and have seen them all up close, but I have in fact never thought about the history behind the places until now. I think you did a very nice job in explaining the history and also in capturing each photo and matching it to the particular piece of history behind it! Very good job:).

  3. I love your approach to this exercise! You didn't know what was interesting or "loaded" about Waukesha so you did some research - and it turns out there is a lot buried underneath the surface of this town! Very cool project. I really enjoy the eery quietness of the photographs - paired with your text it is easy to load the images with our own visuals and ideas connected to the story. Well done!
