Shooting Exercise #6 - Open Shoot

I took pictures of kitchen utensils/stuff this week in a department store.  It's usually my favorite place (with dishes and such) in these kinds of stores, and I came up with some pretty dynamic photos I think.  Enjoy!

  1. Fun idea for your open shoot this week! There is something interesting about photographing in a department store (including the fact that it's often not allowed). I love the way that you filled the frame with kitchen things in the first four images, and I also love that in a couple of the images you could fool the viewer into thinking that you're in a domestic space until they notice a tag or sticker on the object... The image of your mom is funny, but maybe doesn't visually belong with the others. You should look at the work of Brian Ulrich. He photographs in "big box" chain stores with a discreet camera and captures photographs of people immersed in shopping experiences. They're very much about consumerism and about all of the "stuff" that we are constantly buying and replacing. He also has a series in thrift shops, documenting what happens to our old stuff when we replace it... I think you'll find his work interesting and may be inspired to take what you've been doing to a more conceptual level!
